2022 Volkswagen Atlas vs 2022 Mazda CX-9: More performance in the VW

Buying a mid-size SUV with three rows of seats involves a lot of decisions. The starting point is that we need to decide what matters most to us and then compare the models that best meet our needs. There are several choices in the mid-size SUV segment, including the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas and the 2022 Mazda CX-9.

Both mid-size SUVs offer plenty of space, but in this segment the Volkswagen Atlas has the advantage. It is also more efficient than the Mazda CX-9. The Atlas is the perfect option for families looking for space and who don’t want to compromise on performance and towing capability.

Two engines with more power for the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that delivers 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. The Atlas comes standard with a 9-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 also features a 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine delivering 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is one of the most powerful in the segment, but it is not able to compete with the Volkswagen Atlas’s V6. The 276 horsepower of the latter is superior to many models in the mid-size SUV segment including the CX-9. This power also allows the Atlas to tow more than the Mazda CX-9, a lot more actually. The Volkswagen Atlas indeed tows up to 5,000 pounds while the CX-9 can only tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The Kia Sorento also offers a plug-in hybrid option with over 50 kilometres of all-electric range. This makes the Sorento a very appealing option for buyers looking for a spacious vehicle that also happens to be very efficient. In fact, you might be able to do most of your daily commutes without needing a single drop of fuel!

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is also larger than the CX-9. Its cargo capacity is set at 583 liters with all seats in place and 2,741 liters with the rear seat lowered. The CX-9 offers 407 liters with all seats in place and 2,017 liters with the rear seats lowered.
